NIH Consensus Development Conference on Celiac Disease
The NIH Consensus on Celiac Disease took place from June 28-30, 2004. The Consensus conducts conferences in order to “s to evaluate the available scientific information on a biomedical issue and develop a statement that advances understanding of the issue under consideration and will be useful to health professionals and the public.”
Of the conclusions reached on the Celiac Disease conference was a six-element identification of celiac disease:
C - Consultation with a skilled dietitian,
E - Education about the disease,
L - Lifelong adherence to a gluten-free diet,
I - Identification and treatment of nutritional deficiencies,
A - Access to an advocacy group, and
C - Continuous long-term follow-up.
